As the only community theatre in Monroe County, MCT fills a vital cultural niche in the Keys
Its origins as a traveling troupe reflect the isolated and nautical character of the Keys at mid-20th century. The shift to a permanent home mirrors the Keys’ growth and increasing stability as a community The conversion of a former lounge / cinema building into a combined theatre and cinema is symbolic: it preserves a piece of local architectural history while giving it new life as a cultural center.
MCT’s programming — from musicals to plays, from dance to art exhibitions — demonstrates a commitment to serving both locals and visitors, acknowledging the Keys’ seasonal and tourist population as part of the community.
Through its youth camp, MCT invests in the next generation, ensuring that theater remains part of the cultural fabric of Marathon for years to come.
